Birmingham Jewish Recorder

Established in 1935, the Birmingham Jewish Recorder is the medium of communal communications. It is published monthly and features reports on communal events, details of communal societies and includes articles about Israel and of general interest.
The Recorder is not affiliated to any of the local synagogues and attempts at all times to present a true and impartial picture of the many interests and activities within the community. It has always been a strong supporter of Israel and offers an impartial presentation of local communal life as highlighted through the pages of its monthly issues.
Advertising is one source of revenue for this volunteer run magazine- for rates contact advertising @recorder.org.uk
BREAKING NEWS- The Recorder will cease to be published in hard copy as from January 2022- instead it will be available online.
As from January 2022, the Recorder will go online under the auspices of the Representative Council. Whilst it is a given that many people prefer a hard copy , it is no longer financially viable to keep the monthly record of our community and beyond, in this format. But we are confident that the online edition will be as successful as the printed copy- obviously we need to ensure that there will be a readership. A new annual subscription introductory rate will be £10 per household and the cost of classified and personal advertisements has also been significantly reduced.

FREDERICK JACOMBS AND EVA BLOOM SPORTS LODGE NO. 64
E-mail: goisd.birm@brijnet.org
The Frederick Jacombs Sports Lodge No. 64 was first registered as a branch of the Grand Order of Israel and Shield of David Friendly Society, under the Friendly Societies Act of 1896, on 9th October 1935. In those early years before the establishment of the National Health Service its main objective was to provide various sickness/death benefits through the voluntary contributions of its members.
In the years since then the Lodge has consistently flourished and has benefited by the amalgamation to form the Frederick Jacombs and Eva Bloom Sports Lodge No. 64. Although the Lodge still retains its welcome benefits, a particular attraction for young and old alike is its sporting and social events, the organisation and success of which is a matter of great pride. Socials are held regularly on the last Tuesday of each month commencing at 8.15 pm. and prospective members are very welcome to join. Sporting events are held throughout the year.
The Lodge is considered unique in that it attracts members from all age groups and from all levels of religious observance, all mixing socially in the true spirit of Jewish brotherhood. It is on these fundamentals that the Order is based - that of a truly friendly society.

KOL KINOR - VOICE OF THE LYRE
The choir was formed in September 1990 by Joyce Rothschild and Jane Ward. Alexander Knapp is the Honorary Patron with Jacob Fifer and Mike Fowler currently serving as the conductors and musical directors.
The group consists of singers who perform, enthuse and enjoy singing and performing Jewish music, bringing together representatives from all aspects of the Jewish community in Birmingham and friends of other faiths. The rich and diverse repertoire covers many aspects of Jewish culture, including liturgical and synagogue pieces set to modern, traditional and folk arrangements. Performances are in Yiddish, Hebrew and English, with commentaries on the history and significance of these works in relation to musical development and their religious context within festivals and services. New members would be welcome even if unable to read music as support is always there!

Shirley Golf Club

Shirley Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course, founded some 50 years ago by Jewish golfers at a time when it was impossible for Jews to belong to golf clubs. Today this golf club has a majority of non Jewish members but there is still a core of Jewish members. There are golf competitions through the year with a medal every month and closed competitions throughout the year. There are a number of open competitions to which other clubs in the Midlands area are invited to join. The major golfing season is during the summer months and these are ongoing at the present time. Golf is played seven days a week and all visiting golfers will be made welcome subject to the normal rules of the course.
