Birmingham J-Soc

Birmingham JSoc is here for every Jewish student in Birmingham, regardless of religious domination. We are the largest JSoc with over 800 active members from a variety of backgrounds and have officially been recognised as the “Best JSoc in the Country”, by the Union of Jewish Students. Although the size of the society can seem overwhelming, there is a real sense of community here.
Birmingham JSoc is the only JSoc that provides it members with a hand made cooked Shabbat meal, every week, regardless of whether exams are going on or not. We like to regard Friday nights as the 'jewel in Birmingham JSoc's crown'!
Birmingham also has a unique connection with the wider Jewish community. Students are often invited out for Shabbat lunch by the local communities of Central Synagogue and Singers Hill. This is unique to Birmingham JSoc. Our close connections to these synagogues mean that students never go hungry!
Choosing a university or college is a life changing decision. In terms of Jewish life on campus, Birmingham JSoc provides a wealth of activities from Israel-related speakers to girls Zumba. Please do contact myself, or any other member of the committee, with any questions you may have. If you wish to look around Birmingham Universities or meet with us any day outside of the department Open Days, please feel free.

Kadimah - The Jewish Counselling Service

Kadimah is a counselling service specifically founded to look after the counselling specifically founded to look after the counselling needs of Jewish Students. Its aims are:
Counselling - The transition from the home environment into university may bring with it unexpected challenges and difficulties. For many of us, university is the first opportunity to reassess the ideology and beliefs we were brought up with. Internal psychological resources are at times overstretched in order to handle social, financial and academic pressures, creating the need to seek counselling. If this is how you feel, you are not alone.
The Jewish element - Research has shown that Jewish students have recognisable counselling needs. These might include the impact of traditional family meals on eating disorders, dating outside the faith, reassessing religiosity and culture and dealing with the Jewish component present in the common students needs mentioned above. If you prefer to see a Jewish counsellor, then this service is for you.
Confidentiality - counselling is a confidential service. What you say between you and your counsellor will remain in private. The counsellors are bound by a strict code of confidentiality. In order to ensure that you are receiving the best advice, your counsellors work is always overseen by a supervisor. This is done without identifying you or your personal details.
Cost - This counselling service is free of charge for all students. We only ask that you commit to the sessions that you have booked, and if you need to cancel a session, you let the service know 24 hours in advance.
Kadimah was founded and is run by Esther Cohen Dip. Counselling, B.Phil. She is a member of the BACP and AUCC. Kadimah abides by the BACP's code of ethics. For further information or to book an appointment phone Esther Cohen on 07973696523 or email her at kadimah@gmail.com
