REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL OF BIRMINGHAM & WEST MIDLANDS JEWRY
The Representative Council of Birmingham & West Midlands Jewry comprises an Executive consisting of :

Vice Chairman - Mr Alan Blumenthal
Treasurer - Mr Peter Posaner

together with delegates representing the following organisations within the West Midlands Jewish communities:

Association of Jewish Graduates
Birmingham Hillel House
Birmingham Jewish Community Care
Birmingham Jewish Housing Association
Birmingham Jewish Recorder
CST
Frederick Jacombs and Eva Bloom Lodge

Kol Kinor Choir
Midland Regional Chaplaincy Board

West Midlands Friends of Israel
World Jewish Relief
and local members of the Board of Deputies.
The Council was formed in the late 1940s and over the years it has involved itself in promoting the lay interests of the community, liaising with its constituent organisations, with Jewish communities abroad, and with the non-Jewish community. The Council aims to support efforts of its constituent organsations to encourage Jewish culture and education across the ages, enhance the harmony across local Jewish congregations of all religious affiliations, advance the interests of its youth, and promoting a number of social and other activities.
Council meetings are held four times a year and specific Council sponsored community events/activities –
Yom HaShoah (Holocaust) Commemoration, Yom HaZikaron, Yom Ha'Atzma'ut and Yom Yerushalayim (in conjunction with WMFI) as well as Mitzvah Day are organised by subcommittees on the appropriate dates.
There are also a number of Cross Community Activities which are specifically organised to bring people together from across the community- currently these include a Book Club, Bridge for Beginners, Gardening Group, Knit and Natter, Scrabble, Rummikub and Kalooki group and a Walking Group for the over 60s. During the year the Council organises one or two other events for the community such as election hustings a Garden Party and a Cross Community Quiz
The Communal Trust Fund raises money to support community organisations.
